This is a neat free place to check out, but nothing too exciting. It was neat to see the Mardi Gras costumes and visit the Alice Mosley museum, but nothing too exciting. The best part was the duck pond and bridge with love locks. Cute idea and I wish I would have known to bring a lock.
I was not sure what to expect but this turned out to be well worth the stop. The first floor includes Mardi Gras costumes, a wall of pictures for local blues greats, and other various historical materials and references. The second floor includes Alice Mosely paintings, which were a joy to view. Hat's off to the volunteer staff who were so helpful about the museum contents and the local community. Worth a stop if you are in the area.
We stopped in to check out the museum and really enjoyed the posters, train displays and particularly the Mardi Gras costumes. The workmanship and details that were put into these garments is amazing. I wish there were room for more!
We were the only visitors there; there was some construction going on out front. We accessed some brochures of local attractions and things to see. Of interest here is the information on the 1966 movie "This Property is Condemned" starring Robert Redford and Natalie Wood with screenplay by Francis Ford Coppola. The depot served as the depot of Dodson Mississippi with a set built across the street depicting the 1930s depression for the Dodson setting.
The L&N Depot has a lot in a small space. Ground floor has a local Mardi Gras exhibit and one on a couple of films partially shot there. Upstairs is the excellent Alice Moseley Folk Art Museum (separate review there).
We made a quick visit to the L & N Depot while in Bay St. Louis on our way from Biloxi to New Orleans. Its exterior is attractive. Inside it contains a display of Mardi Gras dresses and features of the Railroad history and tourism of the area. The staff member was helpful. We are glad we searched this one out.
