We found Maruyama Zoo to be a bit underwhelming for the casual tourist. While I appreciate the effort put into the newer exhibits like the Asian Elephant House and Polar Bear House, the zoo as a whole offers a limited variety of animals. The overall layout felt quite traditional, and outside of those two main star attractions, there isn't much to hold a visitor's interest for long. It felt more like a local city park zoo than a major regional attraction. Recommendation: If your time in Sapporo is limited, I would recommend prioritizing other city sights or day trips instead. The admission price feels high for the sightseeing value offered, unless you are a deeply dedicated fan of those specific star animals.
