Valencia’s Hidden Sistine Chapel

点评：We visited the Church of San Nicolás, and it is every bit as stunning as you could imagine. During our stay in Valencia we saw several churches, including the cathedral and its tower, but this hidden gem was by far the highlight, perhaps even the most beautiful church we’ve ever visited, including the Sistine Chapel itself.
The ceiling is a true wonder: intricate, vibrant frescoes that seem to come alive above you. The light show enhances the experience even further, illuminating details of the artwork and immersing you in the stories they tell. Alongside this, the ticket cost includes an audio guide and there was also an additional projected short presentation about the characteristics / qualities that defined this saint in one of the curtained alcoves and there were large interactive screens allowing visitors to explore the history of the church across the centuries.
Overall, the way this church has embraced technology is a very fresh approach to engaging the public in religious and cultural spaces, and it will definitely appeal to a wide audience, especially younger, more tech-savvy visitors.
We didn’t see this church on a tour and whilst tours that include this fabulous church are possible, it’s definitely not necessary, and we didn’t miss out by going on our own. In fact, we possibly gained, as we could experience it at our own pace and even spend time in the chapel for quiet reflection – something a tour would rarely allow given timings and group needs. Don’t feel you need to be on a tour to enjoy this church, you absolutely don’t.
If you’re going to Valencia, San Nicolás is an absolute must-see. You will not be disappointed.
