Surprisingly big carnival, Rio style on Sunday

点评：I was a bit surprised as Sunday parade (on Quinquagesima, the last Sunday of Shrovetide) was very big - there were nearly 9000 masks in 92 mask groups on the parade through the town center, with Korzo being the center point. The whole parade took more than 8 hours long, with beginning on noon and ending somewhere between 8 and 9 PM. On the course, there were at least 6-7 different podiums where spectators could hear all about different mask groups and groups danced/performed on their music. Nearly every mask group has its specially decorated vehicle (truck or car with carrier trailer), some even with their own music speakers for their own party.
As a Slovenian, I have been to more traditional Venice and Ptuj (Kurentovanje) carnivals in the past where traditional masks have very strong appearance in all parades and other events. In contrary to them, Rijeka has not many traditional masks, with only Halubajski zvončari being the exception (they always come last on the Sunday parade). Rijeka Carnival therefore focus more on the style of the Rio Carnival, with many very different mask groups and with show being the most important part, as an overture to all night parties after that.
In case if you become hungry between the parade, there are possibilities to take away food from some restaurants or to go to one of them to eat and after that going further in the parade course to see some "previous" masks - they are not moving quickly, in 20 minutes one mask group only makes around 200 meters more on the course or something like that. It is also a nice spot at the beginning of the parade course on the Riva along the sea where people gather and party along with mask groups that are still there to begin.
To sum up, it was a very special and funny experience that I will remember for a long time.
