点评:My friend and I attended the last two days of the 2022 Andong Mask Dance Festival, the city’s first festival held since COVID-19 started. This year’s theme was Hero Returns in Chaos World, so there were a lot of superhero themed performances, sets, and decorations. The festival differed from previous festivals in that this year’s festival was street-style, and the bulk of performances took place along the streets of downtown Andong. In the past, performances were centralized in Talchum Park. The festival length was also reduced from 10 to 5 days this year (September 29, 2022 through October 3, 2022). I do not know what the structure or dates will be for next year’s festival.
The street-style festival this year meant that you could wander along the streets and find various performances going on in the middle of the street or on outdoor stages. There was no general admission fee for the festival! Rather, you paid 7,000 KRW/person (for most categories of people) if you wanted to view a performance that took place specifically in the Maskdance Theater or if you wanted to enter the Metaverse Experience Zone (which allowed people to view events virtually in light of COVID-19 concerns).
We had a blast at the festival, and if I ever find myself back in Andong in the future, I would love to attend this festival again! There was plenty to do and see, and it was extremely family friendly. There were craft tents, numerous vendors, and a variety of performances ranging from children doing taekwondo to traditional skits that involved music and dance. There were also a few international dance groups that performed, though it sounded like there had been more international groups pre-COVID. Furthermore, some events took place a little farther outside of downtown Andong, including events at Weolyeonggyo Bridge (about a 7 minute taxi ride from downtown) and the Hahoe Folk Village (about a 25 min taxi ride from downtown).
All event staff were helpful and friendly, and festival programs were available in both Korean and English. I will note that the volume of the performances that involved outdoor speakers was extremely loud, and there were fireworks at the closing ceremony, so bring earplugs if you think you might want them! Also, the festival schedule was not released online until about a week before the festival started. All in all, I highly recommend attending the festival for anyone wanting to explore Andong and traditional Korean culture!
