Omar is great guide and our new friend! Would highly recommended!

点评：Our trips with Omar were the highlights of our visit, and we were all inclusive at the hotel! He shared with us his rich knowledge of the area, history and his own Mandinka Tribe heritage. We were lucky enough to visit the compound where he stayed, and we spent time with Kemo (his nephew) and his family, and even shared their food. It was definitely an eye opening and humbling experience, especially seeing as they only have enough for one main meal a day! But they are such lovely people. The locals are friendly and will refer to their area lovingly as the “smiling coast”. Even though the majority are struggling to put food on the table, they are still so friendly and kind. If they you have unwanted goods, they will gladly take it off your hands at the end of your stay. Wish I had taken all my unwanted stuff to give away!
We visited the Monkey park - which is a must if you want to interact with monkeys, crocodile pond, Lamin lodge to see the oyster farm and the mangroves, shopped at Albert market in Banjul. There is so much to do there locally that we didn’t feel the need to go to Senegal to do walking with the lions and the Safari type animals. I would have liked to have visited the stone circles (supposedly the largest concentration of stone circles in the world - we have one stone henge, they have 2000 of them), but it would have been either a very long trip or a 2 day trip (one night away). Maybe next time. We have Omar and Kemo on speed dial (WhatsApp) so next time we visit we will be booking them in advance. Omar really will try to make your trip work, just tell him what you’d like to do and he’ll try his best to make it work. The locals all know him as he’s been doing this for 16 years! And they know him as “Picasso” - which has a different meaning to them than it does to us - in Mandinka (I think or to them at least) it means “the one who makes things happen”!
He even took us out to a Kora gig at the local bar just because my wife mentioned she liked that style of music. No charge and he and Kemo stayed with us till midnight and made sure we got back to our hotel safely.
Anyway, if you are in the area of Bakau, definitely don’t bother with TUI tours which are much more expensive. Use the local tour guides, you’ll find them everywhere :) But we used Omar, and we loved making a genuine connection with him and Kemo - they are like our family in Gambia. We have kept in touch and would highly recommend locating him on the beach behind the Ocean Bay hotel. Or better still, just add him on WhatsApp - it seems to be what the locals use most there - and message him about your visit, where you’re staying and he’ll be able to quote you for whatever you’d like to do.
We hope you enjoy your visit to Gambia and get to meet Omar, and Kemo too :) (and all the lovely locals). Don’t forget to take your unwanted goods - as they say “there’s no waste in Gambia!”
