点评:We came to Alverstone Mead searching for the elusive red squirrels on the final morning of our trip, after already having tried three other locations with no luck. We should have come here first as it didn’t disappoint! We arrived early in the morning about 8:30-9am. Visited the hide area first - no luck here (this may be because the feeders looked empty), we just saw a few friendly small birds. We walked quietly along the path into the woodland and sure enough within a few minutes we saw two red squirrels chasing each other in the trees! We walked a little further and came across a confident large rabbit who hopped around very close to us. There were more small birds following along (we could also see larger birds in the tree canopy above, including two Jays). We were limited on time because of catching our ferry home - but we were delighted with another red squirrel sighting in the trees on the way back to the start of the trail! Our visit lasted approximately 25 minutes in total and we saw three red squirrels within this time and we didn’t have to walk too far down the trail before finding them.
Highly recommend coming here to see the red squirrels and the other wildlife - if we’d had more time we would have loved to have walked for longer and i’m sure we would have seen much more.
The only slight drawback is the lack of parking - the satnav took us to the entrance right next to the hide up a narrow road (Burnt House Lane I believe) - and there is no parking allowed here, so we had to be dropped off (thankfully my partner had seen red squirrels in the Lake District previously, so didn’t mind “taking one for the team”). One of the friendly residents mentioned there was parking back in the village (and I think there’s another entrance to the reserve that end) but would definitely recommend looking into this before arriving.
