Well worth visiting, but needs a kick to liven it up!

点评：The site was discovered by accident and preserved only by the generosity of a wealthy local amateur archaeologist buying the site. It would otherwise have been developed as a housing estate! That's how much we cared about history in the 1960s. Most of the archaeological work was done by amateurs in the 60s and 70s, and the museum buildings are 70s - good quality and themselves nicely preserved, but the place could do with an update, not to destroy its character but to brighten it up. The lighting is desperately dismal even on a nice day, and the signs over each mosaic are too low down and in cream on maroon making them unattractive and hard to read. The shop has limited stock. The car park is desolate. However, the interpretation in the room next to the cash desk is very good.
The mosaics themselves are well worth seeing, and there are very many to see dating from the first to third centuries AD. The main one, with the dolphin, is impressive of course, but the simple first-century black-and-white mosaics are lovely too. There are then the grounds, which show the scale of the palace, and a video which while education is again very dated. the website is appalling, with almost nothing on it.
This place really needs an injection of life! It contains some of the best Roman mosaics in England, perhaps Europe, in the palace of the Roman "king" of England, yet it's almost invisible as a tourist attraction. The owners must do more to publicise this hidden Roman masterpiece.
