点评:The Théodore Monod African Art Museum (Musée Théodore Monod d'Art Africain) is one of the oldest art museums in West Africa, named after Théodore Monod, a French naturalist. Though small, with very little art, the museum is dedicated to African art and culture, showcasing a diverse collection of traditional African artifacts, masks, sculptures, textiles, and more from Senegal, Nigeria, Guinnea-Bissau, Sudan, Mali, Cameroon, Mauritania and Benin.
If you read the reviews, you'd be tempted not to visit. I've learned, after visiting many countries around the world, that reviews are subjective, based on people's opinions about a country, their experiences and their biases. Often it is also informed by their lack of knowledge and the context of what they are observing. Museums are squarely situated within a country's political context. Factors such as budgeting and funding, cultural diplomacy and censorship have an impact. A museum is not just a building filled with things. There's always a rich legacy to learn about.
There is a restaurant on the premises, behind the museum. We almost missed it, because it is not well advertised. It appears not to get too many visitors. We enjoyed a delicious fish dish.
This museum has a special meaning for us in South Africa. It is situated on Place de Soweto (a well known township in South Africa), on the corner of Nelson Mandela Road.
