点评:Welcomed by a friendly & helpful lady custodian , who gave us a potted history of the castle before we went in. It appeared to have begun back in the 15th century, as two separate towers built by Lord Ruthven for his two sons , who didn’t get on. In the 1600s , the Murray family joined the two towers into one impressive building. There are info boards throughout giving you the very chequered history of the castle, which Mary Queen of Scots & King James VI passed through centuries ago. The stone steps are dauntingly narrow & steep , so proceed with care. Worth going up to the top for the view. Despite being empty it’s very atmospheric. If only these walls could speak - and the painted ceiling in the hall is quite remarkable. Attractive well-kept grounds suitable for picnicking , a nice wee shop , and visitor toilets.
