点评：The Quattro Fontane di Taormina is a unique fountain out in front of the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas of Bari on Cathedral Square (Piazza Duomo). You can’t miss it as you walk down Corso Umberto, the main street of Taormina. The fountain was built in 1635 and became known as Quattro Fontane from the four columns placed around the fountain. Each column has a seahorse mounted on top of it and the water flowed out of the mouth of the seahorse, although on the day we were there, only one actually had running water. On a pedestal in the center of the fountain stands a mythological creature (1/2 woman - 1/2 animal) with a crown on her head, holding a scepter in her right hand, and a globe with a cross in her left. This is reportedly the town's coat of arms. Most fountains in Europe were made so people would have water for drinking and other household uses. I saw someone filling up their water bottle, so I guess it’s still safe to drink. (PaM)
