点评:So nine months on, and I have to eat my own words. Last September I left a somewhat gloomy review of Quinta Shopping bemoaning a decline that I perceived from its glory days in the early ‘noughties’. So, needing to visit for a call into the pharmacy, and a visit to the paper shop for a magazine, my expectations of the wider experience were low. We arrived about 7.30pm.
There was a bit of a buzz coming from Tony’s, the place was quite full and a pleasing noise of enthusiastic conversation drifted from there across the square. We’d had a big late lunch, so it was not our destination of choice because we only wanted a drink and a snack.
So, what’s this? A rig set up for guitar and vocals with looper pedals, and voice harmoniser as per Ed Sheeran…but when we arrived, no musician…but clearly a statement of intent. We had a look at the new wine bar, but the chalk board, which advertised Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, all with appropriate times, seemed to be suggesting we’d need to eat dinner if we had a drink there. The coffee shop BLU was deserted, no customers there, so not especially appealing.
My wife said at this point that she has seen a sign for Tapas somewhere. As we wondered back to where the sound equipment had been set up we saw that it was outside the Melting Pot pub that Tapas was advertised. There was a table for two free almost opposite where we hoped the music man would appear, so it seemed a good choice.
We ordered drinks, some tempura prawns, Thai fish cakes, and nachos to share between us, and before our food arrived, the musician started to get ready. Even we he was practicing you tell that here was a very competent guitar player. Using a looper to record his own backing, and the voice harmoniser to add harmonies and depth to his vocals he proceeded to deliver an eclectic mix of covers but with his own jazz influenced take on all of them. He was excellent. ‘Free Fallin’’ was a highlight for me, more like the John Mayer version than Tom Petty, but perfect for a relaxed summer’s evening. I won’t go through the whole set list but it included a really interesting version of Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish you were here’. There is so much talent in the world…and from an inattentive start the diners in the restaurants gradually started to show their appreciation of this musician as he finished each group of songs.
This was a wonderfully laid back and entertaining evening. If I had I hat I’d gladly eat it, because this has changed my view of the square.
