点评:The 13th century Ospedale is one of the historic sights at the small, medieval, hilltop town of San Ginesio. If you enter San Ginesio through the Porta Picena gateway, you will pass by it on your right.
Despite the name, it was not a hospital in the modern sense. Rather than tending to the sick and ill, it more like a hostel for medieval pilgrims. Pilgrims travelled on foot, a difficult and long journey, often through remote countryside. Along the way, they stopped here and at similar places that formed a trail between Rome and Loreto.
The hospices offered accommodation and rest for tired pilgrims - sort of like a medieval version of a travelling salesman’s motel.
It was nothing lavish - just beds or straw mattresses in common rooms. Generally pilgrims would be given alms and food by locals.
This hospital/hospice is interesting because it is unusually well preserved, with a large intact arched portico and loggia.
