Charming Church in Winchcombe - Come See the Humorous Gargoyles

点评：St. Peter's Church sits in the center of charming Winchcombe. While Winchcombe is not very large, the lucrative wool trade in the 1400s enabled it to build this grand and fun structure.
The church itself is just off the street and there is free and easy parking roughly 75 meters away.
The most interesting feature is the set of humorous gargoyles that surround the structure. The best and easiest to see are those on the street side. We've read different accounts of what they represented. Most seem to focus on unpopular local characters, such as the local sheriff or monks from the abbey next door(now gone) who were disliked by the town. In any event, they are expressive and funny. Note that while the very best gargoyles are on the street side, there is a second row above them and additional gargoyles in various states all around the building.
Inside there is a very impressive stained glass window. There is embroidery said to have been made by Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife. [By coincidence, the castle less than a mile away - Sudeley Castle - was owned by his sixth wife, Catherine Parr and it is also worth a visit).
Note the golden cockerel at the top of the tower.
The church is often staffed by volunteers who are eager to show it off. If they are not there, there is also helpful literature on the church's history.
This is a fun and interesting church in a sleepy Cotswold town. We found it easy to reach and very much worthwhile.
