点评:RockFort in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy). The rock is believed to be one of the oldest rock formations in the world. To reach the small temple at the top there are 437 steps to climb, all cut into the rock, most of which are enclosed walled flights, giving it an old world castle feel. Half way up the rock are 2 temple halls, one of which has 100 stone pillars. Shoes must be removed before starting the climb as the entire Rockfort is classed as a sacred temple and declared a monument of National importance.
The entrance is not very obvious, between some shops with a few stalls either side as you walk the first few metres of the 'alley'. Shoes can be left in a storage shop on the right hand side of the 'alley'. I don't know if there is a charge however as we chose to carry our shoes until after the first flight of stairs, across the little road and left them for free in the shoe area there.
Take a steady climb, the walled steps are steep in some parts but there's lots of landings to pause on. Once you emerge into the open air (a couple of stalls sell refreshments, refreshing and much needed drinks) you will see the real rock face and cut steps, steep and slanting. Keep a hold of the hands rail and anyone can make the climb. The views are grand. The temple at the top is only small but worth the climb nevertheless..
Take time check the halls and temples in your way up or down or both.
My only negative is we thought it would be more fort-like
