点评:This Cathedral is not straight forward to find, being well embedded in the narrow lanes of the Old Town of Vieste, and as a consequence it’s also difficult to get a good view of the building’s exterior. But this one is worth a visit for its interior.
We were very fortunate during the days we were in Vieste that they coincided with a religious festival and the interior of the Cathedral was beautifully decked out in blue, white and gold drapes.
There has been a religious building on this site from around 1050 but it has been rebuilt many times due to earthquakes and looting by Venetian and Turkish pirates. Much of the stuccoes of the exterior and the inlaid marble altars and the ceiling painted in late Neapolitan Baroque style date from the second half of the eighteenth century.
There are several impressive historical and important pieces of art in the Basilica, but also several reproductions of pieces that have been long lost, such as the statue of St George and the Dragon, which dates from 1961, and replaces an original 18th Century artwork.
