点评:If you are near Federation Square, Hosier Lane is just a quick detour.
It’s a narrow, colourful laneway, with a cobblestones and covered completely in street art, murals and graffiti.
It’s effectively an outdoor gallery with some impressive artwork (and some not so impressive). Political statements with stencilled anti or pro slogans sit alongside decorative, colourful works.
One of the best works is a large mural of a young indigenous boy by the street artist, Matt Adnate. The 23 metre tall image is high up on the back of McDonald House and is easily seen if you are walking up the lane but you can accidentally miss it if you are walking downhill.
These days there’s probably a lot more pointless graffiti detracting from the artwork but it’s still an interesting spot and if you are in the area, you don’t need to allow any more than 5 - 10 minutes to stroll through.
We walked through in the evening and it was buzzing with sight-seers but it might look a little dingy in the day.
Hosier Lane is a shifting canvas and the street art changes fairly often so it might look different to photos you’ve seen posted. When we walked through, a group near the top of the lane were getting ready to produce a new mural by painting a large blue square over old works.
TIP: For those who like street art, AC/DC Lane is close by so its easy to see both at the same time
