点评:Was very pleasantly surprised when our ship unexpectedly visited Saunders island, having visited 33 years previously, See previous review of Dec 23! Landed on the Neck via Zodiacs and had about 3 hours to walk along the beach and cliff to the East of the Neck to see the Rockhopper and Albatross colonies. There were Kara Kara’s, Upland Geese and other local birds around the beach. On the Neck itself there were Gentoo and King penguins dotted around and the bones of a few small stranded whales, near one of the huts. To the south of the neck we found a large metal cauldron that was used to boil down birds for oil. We also spotted Commersons Dolphins swimming in a pod of 5 around our ship for an hour or so. I got to meet David and Biffa, island owners, who had parked up just off the beach in their 4x4 vehicles and had a few souvenirs to sell. It was interesting to show photos of my previous 1 month visit to the settlement in the 1990s, with a much younger Biffa. If you had more time there are Elephant seals, large scale whale beaching sites, Tussock grass elsewhere on the island. For historic sights there is the original British fort near the settlement and I understand a lot of jettisoned fuel tanks from the Falklands War have now been taken away. But if you like Penguins, Birdlife and history this is the place to visit.
