点评：My wife and I went on an 11 day safari to Kenya and Tanzania with Odyssey Safaris and had a wonderful time. They tailor the trip to the client's wishes but this was not a recline-by-the-pool vacation. There were plenty of early mornings (which is the best time to be out looking for wildlife) and long drives over rough roads. The wildlife was just spectacular especially viewed from as close as we were able to get. In the areas we visited, the animals are accustomed from birth to having large vehicles, mainly six-seat Toyota Land Cruisers, near them. There's no hunting so the animals do not fear the vehicles which means you can get very near to them and their behavior is seemingly unaffected. We saw lion cubs playing with a wildebeest hoof, elephants taking mud baths, giraffe, rhinos, lions courting, lions sleeping, elephants crossing a marsh, and more zebra, gazelle and other animals than we could count.
The emphasis for our trip was on the game drives but the food and accommodations were also nice. We stayed mostly in lodges from the Serena group. These got better and better as we moved from Amboseli, to the Masai Mara and finally a lodge on the Ngoro Ngoro crater rim. We also spent two nights at Intimate Camp Zebra where you stay in a tent on the Serengeti. The food, staff and stars were great there but the heat during our stay was also a bit much so time your trip accordingly.
Our guides were great, particularly Erastus in Amboseli, Simon in the Mara and head guide Eliud who met us at the airport and helped us when my wife was having a bad reaction to the anti-malaria medication. Air Kenya was also very helpful on that occasion at the Nairobi airport. From the front office, Hannah helped us get our visas and answered the many questions we had while preparing. Owner and Director Mark Cqhill led his team in creating our trip.
Odyssey does custom, private safaris so it was just my wife and I and our guide in the vehicle. This is more expensive than some group trips but the advantage is that you have much more control over your own trip. I, for instance, did not wish to spend hours waiting for wildebeest to cross a river and was able to say "let's go find something else to see." We were fortunate to see two crossings, and they are spectacular but there is so much to see just by driving around and looking.
We thought of this as a once-in-a-lifetime trip but had such a great time we would consider going back and would definitely book again with the team at Odyssey Safaris.
