点评:My wife and I had a tremendously informative and enjoyable private visit at Cognac Bertrand yesterday. We were initially greeted by Jean Francois, who directed us to the main house, where we met Seph (the distillery cellar master) for our guided tour. He initially outlined the family history, as Bertrand is a family owned and run business--with a strong influence from the women in the family. His wife Therese currently runs the marketing side of the business, and her grandmother Simone ran the entire estate for many years after the passing of her husband in the early 1990s. Her brother Samuel is now in charge of the vines and production.
Seph also covered the geological / agricultural history of the region, along with annual cycle of the growing process, before moving on to the distillation and aging aspects. Overall very informative, and he answered all questions about the growing, production and maturation of the final product.
Ah yes, now on to the tasting! We were presented with three cognacs to sample--VS, Napoleon, and XO, along with a Pineau Rouge and Pineau Blanc. There was also a tray of sweet and salty snacks to pair (fresh cherries, chocolates, macaroons, quiches) to enhance the experience. The VS is very good, despite its young age--I could see this (or the VSOP) as a perfect starter for cognac-based cocktails. The Napoleon is really the sweet spot in the lineup regarding quality and value. But the XO truly shines in its roundness (that's for you, Seph) and complexity. Both Pineaus make a fine aperitif.
Highly recommend a visit to Bertrand if you're ever in this area. I would call or email in advance to check on availability, as they are a small family operation. Therese was very responsive and accommodating as we were passing through on a specific day.
