John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Painted Hills Unit的点评
点评：What a magical place! Who needs to travel all the way to Peru's Rainbow Mountain when you can view these Painted Hills right here in the U.S.A.?! We went on a late Monday afternoon in early June 2024 and there was hardly anyone else there. It took a good amount of time to get there as it is easily 1 hr, 20 mins from both Terrebonne or Redmond, OR.
Once here, we hiked a little of the Painted Hills Overlook Trail. This is only a 0.5 mile round trip trail and one of the five hiking trails in the unit. It offers a good panoramic view of the Painted Hills. We then headed over to the Painted Cove Trail (0.25 mile round trip) in which portions of it were a boardwalk with interpretive signs with views of warm red, yellow and orange clay layer markings. We also did the Leaf Fossil Trail (0.25 mile round trip). Lastly, we discovered and enjoyed the Red Scar Knoll Trail (0.25 mile round trip).
This was such a beautiful place in the world. I'm so glad we got to experience this hidden gem together as a family.
