Swinside Stone Circle的点评
点评：As Stone Circles go - Castlerigg, Long Meg and Her Daughters - Swinside Circle is up with them in terms of preservation and location. The views are wonderful. Access is definitely a factor as the road in is single track with drystone walls on either side for about half a mile. Where you reach a fork in the road and on the left is up to the circle and a sign indicates no unauthorised vehicles. There is no designated parking other than passing places on the road in or down the right hand fork. On my visit I was blocking the entrance and the Postman honked his horn. I asked him about parking and he suggested I drive up the farm track and park in a small area of hard standing very close to the circle. He said the farmer was fine so long as the road is clear and you understand he's not responsible and damage to your vehicle by livestock.
The circle is just of the farm track through a five bar gate. Some of the stones have completely fallen over while others still remain perfectly upright. The age of the Stone Circle alone commands reverence. Thinking about the sheer number of varied people who've wandered about the stones through the centuries gave me shivers. Stone circles are special. Some of them older than the Pyramids. If you do enjoy visiting ancient sites then Swinside is worth the trip.
