点评:A one week bus tour with Outback Aussie Tours in October 2022, incorporating three nights in Longreach and 2 nights in Winton was an ideal “local” replacement for our overseas travel, curtailed due to the Covid pandemic. We travelled by air to Emerald from Brisbane, then travelling on the Spirit of the Outback train to Longreach and returned to Brisbane from Longreach on the Spirit of the Outback.
We saw all the well-known tourist icons on the Longreach leg of our journey such as the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the Qantas Founders Museum and the Thomson River Sunset Cruise. However, we also experienced a few not so well known attractions, which included our visit to Camden Park Station on our final evening, which turned out to be a very memorable experience.
The Station is to the east of Longreach, around a 15 kilometre drive by coach. It was the home of Sir James Walker, knighted for his outstanding service, particularly in local government to the Longreach community in 1972 and a founding member of the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The station continues to be owned by the Walker family and prominent personnel on our tour were “Outback” Dan, Sir Frank’s grandson; Lyn, his Mum; and Brooke, his wife.
On arrival at the Station we were met by Outback Dan, who conducted a “coach windscreen tour” of the property providing insight into the station’s award-winning diversification into solar, tourism and improved farming production. At the end of this tour we did get a glimpse of the historic homestead; unfortunately we stayed on the coach and were unable to view the home inside. After this tour we were met by Lyn and Brooke outside the one hundred (100) year old shearing shed. What followed was an interesting talk from Lyn on the changing face of sheep shearing methods and a brief tour of the shearing shed.
Shearing Shed lecture over, we all assembled outside and sat on chairs watching the sunset over the property, sipping a nice glass of wine and enjoying a few savoury nibbles in front of a roaring campfire. A long wooden table with white linen table cloth was transformed into a makeshift “Bar “ for the sunset session. Our first drink was complimentary, then any subsequent drinks cost us a modest $5 each. This was a lovely wind down to our earlier, busy day’s touring. During this time there were opportunities for good silhouette photos throughout the sunset. It was a bit cloudy on the night we were here and so the sunset, while still acceptable, was certainly not spectacular.
After the sunset session, it was time to assemble back into the old Shearing Shed which had been transformed into a very purposeful dining room, where Dan, Lyn and Brooke served a great home style meal of steak and vegetables for mains and sticky date pudding and ice cream for dessert. Having a meal as a group, seated at long tables in a shearing shed was a novel experience. It provided a pleasing, rural atmosphere. Once again drinks were available at $5 a glass. However a word of warning - it was “cash only”.
During the meal Lyn and Dan told us countless stories about their outback experiences and proudly showed off their prize family photos for the entire group, including their highlight photo of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II patting a bull when she and Prince Phillip visited the Station’s homestead in 1970 with Sir Frank as their gracious host. We were all captivated by the sincerity in which Dan and Lyn conveyed their stories and we were impressed with the generous hospitality they afforded all of us. Our Dinner experience went for almost two hours and was most memorable.
Both Dan and Lyn come across as genuine, good-natured and outgoing; qualities one has come to expect and admire about honest, down to earth rural folks. And wife Brooke was quietly in the background making sure the dinner experience went according to plan – a true quiet achiever. This station experience is very much tailored with the non farming tourist in mind and is a must for any “city slicker” wanting to get a bit of a feel for rural life.
Thank you Dan, Lyn and Brooke for a most enjoyable and memorable visit to Camden Park Station. We can appreciate why a reigning Queen agreed to visit this gem in the Longreach region as part of her 1970 Queensland tour itinerary. We are sure Her Majesty returned to England with many fond memories of her visit to Camden Park. Indeed, my wife and I have fond memories of our visit.
