哈雷阿卡拉火山口的点评
点评：1/2 day activity
Rather than sunrise we did sunset. pack warm clothes. Sweatshirt or coat. Pants. a hat. Snacks and water. Consider a book or game to play while you wait. No cell service at summit lot.
We got to park entrance by 3p. Which is plenty of time. We Skipped the lower visitor center and drove to the upper visitor center which Took us until 3:30p. Road is paved all the way to summit.
There are only a couple trails in this park and they are steep. Options to explore: Short walk, 3 hour hike or, 11 mile? hike) . We did a short walk to see the craters, got water, used restrooms then drove to the summit by 4:20p.
We were one of the last cars they let in the summit lot which holds ~ 60 cars. Otherwise, there is parking .2 mi away and at upper visitor center .5 mi away. (If you are moderately fit Park at the summit first, check it out. Then you should have time to walk down to the small visitor center before sunset).
There is a small observatory building at summit which is shelter from the wind. From there you have a great view of craters, big island volcanos and a better view of telescopes (but you can’t go near them.)
Sunset for us was 6:19p so we spent about an hour in our car staying warm. Then walked to the ledge at 6:12p. Plenty of space to stand and watch. It is beautiful and those 5 min go quick.
You can also watch from ledge at upper visitor center. Almost the same view.
Then mad dash to the car to get out! LOL!
Use restroom / get water for the ride back if needed. With traffic and a lead car setting the pace, the drive down from summit to main hwy was an 1 hour and we were in front.
