点评:My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our stop at the Nevada State Museum to walk around the old Carson City mint building. We spent about 3 hours taking our time, but still walking through at a reasonable pace. In addition to the old mint and mint/coin related exhibits, we ended up spending a lot more time than expected on other parts of the museum that were also very intriguing. The main highlights included rocks and minerals, taxidermy and animals, and a lot about mining and silver. Lots of silver mining = why Nevada is called the “Silver State.”
The old mint area has the original coin press which, on Saturdays from 9am-3pm, has demonstrations. One can even buy a silver 1/2 oz blank from the gift shop and they make you a commemorative coin in front of you using the old press. When we were there, the coin design was a tribute to the national Christmas tree being brought in from a forest in Nevada.
Parking was free on the side of the building. It looks like some areas were under construction or renovation so definitely look forward to checking it out again in a few years and see what things have changed.
