点评:My grandson and I have been planning this trip for 3 years and it did not disappoint. The Cumberland Depot is an amazing structure, a beauty of a bygone era. The centerpiece of course is the steam locomotive that conveyed us from Cumberland to Frostburg on the “Frostburg Flyer” route. The WMSR 1309 Baldwin 2-6-6-2 H-6 Mallet is the last of her class and was a thrill to see in person and ride. The ride through the Narrows, paralleling the historic C&O Canal, and past the picturesque Helmstetter’s Curve, as well as rolling through the 914 foot Brush Tunnel, on our way to Frostburg was delightful. The Frostburg Depot was lovely and there were things to see and do in the vicinity without having to take the stairs up to Main Street or the available shuttles.
We chose this train ride as our first because our family’s roots in Frostburg and our connection to coal mining in the area. I hope to do it again someday.
We certainly hit the gift shop at Cumberland Depot to pickup some WMSR swag. I’ve already enjoyed frosty beer in my new “1309” pint glass. All in all, we have a wonderful trip where I could point out things and explain why it was worth seeing because I wasn’t driving - I was a passenger and tourist.
I recommend this even if you aren’t a rail enthusiast. There were some beautiful vistas to see and I imagine they are even more spectacular in fall foliage.
