Folly Beach County Park的点评
点评：Folly Beach is about 15 minutes outside Charleston, SC. I have been going there since the mid-90's, off and on. During that time I have seen it go from a lazy, laid-back community with only a few commercial establishments and no national franchise businesses or restaurants, to a little town crowded with shops, hotels, condos, restaurants and big rental houses. However, there is still a beautiful long beach that is easily accessible to the public, all along the oceanfront. Among the rental beach-houses there are small parking lots every few blocks, and at the end of the main street is Folly Beach County Park.
Admission to the park varies according to the season. We went today, September 19, post Labor-Day, and it was $10 per car. I think during the summer it is $20. Well worth it, because there is convenient parking, and nice facilities: restrooms, outdoor rooms for changing clothes, a snack bar (only open weekends off season), outdoor showers, and a little shop selling beach items. For $35 you can rent a couple of sturdy beach chairs and a big umbrella which the staff will install for you on the beach. There is also a shaded observation deck looking over the ocean. All of it is very clean and attractive and fairly new. Alcohol and glass bottles are not permitted. It closes 30 minutes before sundown.
The beach itself is fine white sand which was dredged in from a nearby river. There are lots of little attractive seashells lying on it, and no litter. There are seagulls who are always on the alert for people sharing their snacks with them. There are Pelicans flying and diving for fish. In fact, we saw a number of fish jumping out of the water.
The surf is usually pretty mild, and you must walk into the ocean quite a ways to get up chin deep, so as a result there is plenty of room for waders, swimmers, and those who just want to bob around. There was a warning today for riptide, but we didn't feel it. There was no lifeguard on duty, but I assume that's because it was off season and a weekday.
The beach above the waterline is fairly wide. I haven't been there at the height of the summer in several years, so I'm not sure how crowded it gets. Today there was lots of room for us to set up our 9x9 beach tent, and have space for a sense of privacy.
It was so pleasant and peaceful, we could really unwind. You can go in the ocean, or lounge on a beach chair and watch at a distance people enjoying themselves, mostly small families, and a few couples who seemed to be newlyweds (Charleston is a top city for destination weddings).
All in all it is a delightful place.
