点评:The 26th foot high Mount Battie Tower can be seen from downtown Camden. This 1921 Tower is today part of Camden Hills State Park which is 2 miles north on US1 from Camden. The cost to enter the State Park is $6. Driving distance from the parks entrance to the top of Mount Battie is less than 4 miles. There is a walking trail that is ranked as moderate.
Regardless if you drive on trek, the vistas from Mount Battie are superb. The entire coastal area of Camden can be observed as well as the expanse of Penobscot Bay.
Historically, there was a house which turned into a recreation center in 1899. A Carriage Road was developed for visitors. By 1920 the complex was torn down, partly due to a devasting fire in the area.
In 1921, the 26th foot stone structure was put in place to commemorate those who were part of WWI. There is a plague on front of the tower that reads: “In grateful recognition of the services of the men and women of Camden in the World War, 1914-1918.
At the time of our visit the Tower was being refurbished. In his latter years, Teddy Roosevelt even climbed around Mount Battie.
Camden Hills state Park does have 30 miles of trails and 5 trail heads. There is also camping.
