点评:Enjoyed a wonderful but challenging early morning hike up Mt Monadnock in the early summer. On vacation from the UK so first time attempting the summit.
Started from Gilson Pond and followed the Birchtoft Trail through woodland, before the ascent really got going on the Red Spot Trail. This then linked to the Pumpelly Trail to reach the summit. Well-signposted and routes clearly marked both up & down, absolutely stunning scenery and the view from the top early on a summer's morning made the climb all worth it. Spoke to a more seasoned climber who commented how the route from Gilson is much much less travelled than other more popular routes like the White Cross and so can make for a more peaceful (though no less strenuous!) climb. Ascent took around 2 hours and the first fellow climbers I met on route were actually at the summit!
Physically challenging with a fair bit of scrambling but having never attempted any summit before, definitely doable if you're physically fit.
Gate hut at Gilson Pond closed when I arrived but looked to stock water and refreshments when open.
