点评:The drive to the lighthouse parking lot was a bit challenging in itself. In September of 2023, the road that we followed according to the GPS was rough with lots of potholes and required careful driving. One is literally in the middle of nowhere, and blowing a tire would be a disaster.
When we arrived at the lighthouse, I was surprised to see a number of cars in the lot. There was even a food truck should one want to have a meal. I did not see any toilet facilities, but I could have missed them.
We decided to walk to see the stacks north of the Old Man of Stoer, and headed out on the path. But soon, we noted, there really wasn't a path. People were walking randomly through the fields. We had a very difficult time trekking through as the ground was quite muddy in spots. My husband even ended up walking out of a hiking boot because the mud was so thick.
It was a hot sunny day (quite unseasonable), which didn't help, as it seemed to take forever until we actually saw the stack we were seeking.
Another couple was there, a bit further up the hill. We ended up following them on the way back, because we thought they might have known about a path that we did not.
We pretty much followed along the top of the cliff, but there wasn't a trodden path. Then, we needed to walk down very steep rocks along a cliff, then climb up the other side to the top to continue the trail. Coming the other direction, we had walked pretty far from the cliff's edge, but, as I said, the lack of any path made it quite challenging.
The view was spectacular, but the stacks on the east side of the NC500 near Duncansby lighthouse were much easier to view.
Be prepared for a couple hour hike. Trekking poles will come in handy, particularly with all of the mud to hike through.
