点评:First -- the entry point to the Jewell Trail near the Mount Washington Cog Railway is changing, and currently hard to find. Temporarily, these are the directions, as of 5/23/2024:
Start at the Mount Washington Cog Railway Station on Base Station Road. (You need to pay $10 cash in the parking lot using an envelope, and hang the receipt on your mirror to keep from getting towed.) Go up the hill following the tracks from the station. In a few hundred yards, there is a set of wooden steps not connected to anything. Climb over or go under the tracks near this point, and look for some red/orange ribbons tied to trees. Follow the ribbons through the meadow for around two minutes, and you will reach the trail. (I think we turned right at that point.) I recall some signs for the Jewell and other trails a few minutes beyond the point of entry.
If you have any trouble, ask inside the station. The people are very helpful!
These directions are likely to change soon -- the trail is being maintained, and the ease of access will likely be improved.
The trail is poorly marked in the beginning, and we had trouble starting and finishing the hike. We found the top of the climb above the treeline to be more strenuous than we expected, lots of climbing over rocks. Fortunately, that part of the trail is marked with cairns, and we had no problems with getting lost up there. The temperature drop between the ground and the summit was at least 20 degrees; however, the day was warm, so we found this change to be comfortable. The wind gusts were strong as others have reported, but not extreme on the day we went. The view was well worth the hike.
Hope this helps others -- happy hiking!
