A great guided tour of the Church
St Paul's Monastery, Jarrow的点评
点评:We parked in the car park for Jarrow Hall, crossed the road, and entered the small park, which we walked through to the Church and Monastery ruins. There were plenty of seats and a play ground in the park. The Monastery grounds are owned and maintained by English Heritage and are free to enter. There are information panels throughout the site. The Monastery is famous for being the home of the Venerable Bede.
After viewing the monastery ruins we made our way into the Church where we were greeted by a gentleman who offered us a tour of the Church. His guided tour was very interesting and he was able to point out things we would otherwise have missed. Whilst the monastery was active there were two Churches, one used exclusively by the monks and another for use by the public. The Churches were subsequently joined together by the construction of a tower. The 'monks' Church still forms part of the current St. Paul's Church with parts constructed in Victorian times. A small circular window in the older part of the Church contains original Saxon glass. The Church is free to enter but voluntary donations are requested.
