The home of English history
St Paul's Monastery, Jarrow的点评
点评:This is an unassuming little site and was home to the Venerable Bede, arguably England's first historian. The remnants of the tiny monastery are in the peaceful and wooded churchyard with English Heritage interpretation boards to show what was where. The church itself has enough Anglo-Saxon left to be worth going inside - including the foundation stone and some rare Anglo Saxon glass in the windows. It's also, sadly, suffered from Victorian restoration, although this affected the later part of the building.
The two ladies who were on duty when I visited were pleasant and chatty, pointing out the more interesting historic features. There is a small shop and the Victorian end has evidence that this is a working church which seeks to help its local community, including providing a warm space in bad weather and which has to pay its bills. Admission is free but it's well worth a few pounds to preserve such an important place.
