Encompassing four city blocks, from Meeting Street to Bay Street, the City Market has been known for sweetgrass baskets, restaurants, bars and local vendors selling everything from jewelry to bags of stone ground grits. Open daily from 9:30 to 5:30 and Friday and Saturday nights from 6:30 to 10:30, the market's three open-air structures or sheds have survived fires, tornadoes, earthquakes and cannonball bombardments during the Civil War. Today, it is a place of enterprise with hundreds of entrepreneurs operating small businesses at Charleston's most visited public attraction. The bustling shopping atmosphere keeps tourists and locals returning to pursue stalls filled with iconic, rare and unexpected products. Of special note are the more than 50 sweetgrass basket weavers who carry on a special Charleston tradition. After a $5.5 million renovation in 2010, the centerpiece of the historic landmark is the Great Hall, enclosed and air conditioned with 20 merchants and a straight central aisle that runs the entire length of the building. Browse the City Market from one end to the other and see bath and body products, perfumes, clothing, home and garden furnishings, cigars, hot sauces, jellies, jams, nuts, Southern recipe cookbooks, tea, coffee, hats, chocolates, toys, gifts, books, wall art, vases, towels and aprons.
