A fantastic experience that will definitely be repeated!

点评：Somewhat delayed, but better late than never!
This is not a public zoo, but a collection of trained animals that go out in the community to care homes and schools to educate about animals and provide mental enrichment for care home residents. The animals are also used for filming for TV, film and natural history documentaries. They seem to be happy and well cared-for - even to the extent that there are facilities for filming onsite so that the animals are not having to travel. Yes, they are working animals, but it seems that it is done really well and with the animals' welfare being the top priority.
I love animal experiences and found it hard to choose from the selection available so did 3 this time and saved more for a return visit (which there will be!). First I met Artis and Menelik, the two lions. I went into a small caged area and was given some long bamboo poles with meat on the end to feed them through the bars. (NB if it's been raining, you are likely to get a bit muddy - wear old clothes!).
Next came the two squirrel monkeys, Antonio and Sharkey, who were great fun! My husband joined me for this one, and at 6'2" tall made a fantastic tree! They sat on our shoulders and heads, eating the dried fruit that we were given to feed them. They were also intrigued by anything sparkly (watch, rings) - they know what they want!
Finally I had an exercise in sorting recycling with Vera, the raven. It was incredible how she knew where each random piece of recycling needed to go - even when I got it wrong! Having cleared the bin, we then had a flying practice before it was time for her dinner.
All in all a fabulous couple of hours. It was lovely to see the individual characters of the different animals and just enjoying seeing them do what they naturally do. I'm lining up the tigers, sloths and penguins for next time!
