点评:The Nathaniel Russell House in Charleston, South Carolina, offers a glimpse into the lives of the mercantile elite who flourished in the late colonial and early federal period, the artisans and craftsmen they hired to build and adorn their opulent mansions and the enslaved men and women whose forced labor made possible their lavish lifestyle. Located at 51 Meeting Street, in the South of Broad District, wealthy merchant Nathaniel Russell's house was completed in 1808. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Charleston. From the street outside the house, you can make out the original owner's initials in the black ironwork of the balcony railing above the front door. The large "N.R." announced to every passerby that the magnificent Federal three-story townhouse belonged to Nathaniel Russell. In fact, every detail of the house is meant to impress the visitor. From the elegant, elliptical and cantilevered spiral staircase in the entryway to the pine doors painted to look like rich mahogany to the plastered walls and high ceilings to the period furnishings to the original artwork to the formal gardens. Open from 10 to 5 Monday through Saturday and 2 to 5 on Sunday, the house also showcases such distinctive features as bright brick arches, marble window lintels, a paneled balustrade, floor-length windows on the second floor and a wrought-iron balcony displaying Russell's initials. Each floor comprises three principal rooms: an oval-shaped drawing room in the center, a rectangular withdrawing room in the front and a square room or bedroom in the back. On the first floor are an entrance hall, Russell's office, an oval dining room and a parlor. There were additional bedrooms on the third floor. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Restored to its original splendor, it definitely is a one-of-a-kind house.
