We were looking for a day trip destination from Lincoln, NE, and I found this. PERFECT. I called ahead to verify hours...just as they said on the website.
It was easy to find the main building of Mackey Hall. Parking was free.
We are history buffs, and found this Museum to be absolutely wonderful. The information provided was in depth, but not overwhelming. We took a little over 90 minutes to go through all the exhibits, and felt it was very, very well curated and presented. We especially appreciated all of the small artifacts and explanations of what they were and how they were used. The written histories on the walls were chronological and extremely interesting. Even though we knew much of the histories of those periods, we still learned a lot from this.
I would say that even though there is a "Kids" area (they must be supervised) to show what a marketplace is like, the rest of the museum is probably not for small kids. And that's okay. I would say it's geared more towards middle school (if the kid is interested in history) and on up. I would even go back with friends to see it again.
It's definitely a "hidden gem". Thank you, York University.
