点评:This is one of the oldest public spaces in the United States, and while today we see it as a park, its origins were so much more that makes it quintessential American. Shortly after the Puritans crossed the Charles River to form what would become the Capitol of New England in Boston, they designated the hillside on SW section of the city a "Common" area open to use by all. It was used as a public place for grazing, but soon other activities took place on the grounds.
After centuries of use, cities and the country changed and while it was never designed or designated a park, it became a great urban recreational area. Today, combined with the Public Garden and Olmstead's Emerald Necklace, it is an incredible space in the middle of the city on par with the great parks of America like Central Park, the National Mall and Golden Gate Park.
When we visited you get all the great recreational amenities of trees, plazas and public art surrounded by incredible buildings both historic and modern. Adjacent to the Common are great historic buildings like the Massachusetts State House and the Park Street Church. However, everywhere you can see the skyscrapers of the city like the Prudential Building, Hancock Tower and the Millennium Tower. In addition to baseball fields and tennis courts, the Common has some great art sculptures like "The Embrace" and the monument to the Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Mass Regiment and it even has a colonial cemetery.
Again, this is part historic public space and part urban recreational area all rolled into a MUST SEE part of Boston.
