点评:While I understand why Lexington gets the credit for the start of the Revolutionary War, for me, it is Concord and the Old North Bridge where the war begins when both sides fully engage in the fight. In many ways, Lexington is no different than the Boston Massacre where Americans are killed but return no fire. It is here at the bridge where Americans and British skirmish and the Americans get first blood as they capture the bridge from the British.
While the battle really escalates on the British retreat back to Boston, the exchange of gunfire from both sides and the casualties of both sides make this the real start of the Revolutionary War and a point from which there is no return from independence. When you reach the creek and bridge, it is hard to image a huge battle here; however, this specific site is more of a skirmish and the battle really commences on the retreat. However, you view it, it is an important space in American History that you feel all Americans should visit.
While I hated to cut the trip to Salem short, this was an important and essential stop for our vacation. As for the site itself, there is a parking lot with a restroom facility, which we used after traveling here, that leads to a path to a monument and bridge. Unfortunately, the path is currently under construction. We were able to get close to the bridge and monument by taking a path behind the Old Manse where we were able to talk to an NPS employee about the site. However, we could only get obscured views of the bridge. If the path is still under construction, go the boathouse of the Old Manse on the river where you can get a good view of the bridge.
Again, this is one of those places that is so important to defining what it means to be an American. If you are close, like Boston, you should make every effort to visit.
