点评：As a Bosnian woman, I feel compelled to apologize to any traveler who comes across this monument without knowing its deeper implications.
This statue, erected in the heart of Sarajevo, represents a moment from the Srebrenica genocide, a father, under duress, calling his son back from hiding. Tragically, both were murdered.
While the story itself is heartbreaking, the decision to commemorate this specific moment as a standalone monument, without broader context or framing, is deeply troubling to many of us.
For some, it may symbolize sorrow or remembrance. But to others, including myself, it stands as a painful reminder of helplessness, of how far we were pushed as a people, and of how little we were able to protect our children.
What troubles me is that we engraved that moment into stone, not as a warning, but as a centerpiece. That message matters.
Other nations remember their tragedies by highlighting resistance, strength, or sacrifice. This statue highlights a moment of emotional and moral collapse, and for many of us, it’s difficult to accept that this is how we represent ourselves.
My suggestion is not to erase history, but to contextualize it. To place a plaque beside it explaining what this was, what it meant, and why it must never happen again.
Memory without reflection is just repetition. Let us remember this, but not as our identity.
Let us teach our children not only what happened, but also how we must rise beyond it.
