点评:This is difficult to rate. I gave 3 stars because the condition of the fort is terrible. I've been to many famous forts & this one was in the worst shape. Which is a shame because there's so much history to the place.
It's a state park & also a National Historic Landmark. In the 60s it was given to the state of Rhode Island after years of neglect & vandalism. They're trying to restore it, but it's in rough shape.
The visitor center has bathrooms & is mostly a large gift shop.
For tours you have to go to a different building which houses a small office. There were some other displays there, but I felt pushed out after I bought the tickets.
$10 for a self guided tour. $12 for a tour guided by a docent. Since he's mobility challenged we did the $10 tour. The $12 tour adds a walk through the whispering tunnels.
He spent a lot of it sitting on a bench in the shade. It's the biggest fort of it's time ever built. You do a lot of walking inside the fort. There's information boards by numbered points of interest.
You can go up some sketchy steps to the top of the fort for really great views of Newport Bridge & the surrounding area.
I think if you like history this would be a nice visit.
