Excellent Living History Guided Tour of the Mark Twain House

点评：Splendid mansion built in 1874 which was the home of Mark Twain and his family for 17 years. It was here that he wrote some of his most famous books including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The home can only be visited by guided tour, and two types of tours are offered. There is a general tour lasting 55 minutes but I'm glad I chose the 70-minute Living History Tour given by a costumed actor who stays in character and represents someone who knew Mark Twain and his family well. In the case of our tour, it was Twain's close friend and pastor, the Reverend Joseph Hopkins Twichell. Our guide was excellent. Knowledgeable, funny and engaging. In addition to admiring the striking architecture inside the mansion, I learned so much about the personal life of Mark Twain including the profound loss felt after enduring several family tragedies. There is also a well-organized and enjoyable museum that can be visited. The collection on display is modest in size but still very interesting. The 22-minute film shown every 30 minutes is worthwhile. I would book your tour in advance online especially if you wish to choose the Living History Tour. I spent just over 2 hours at the site including the guided tour of the home and a visit to the museum. Museum entrance is included when purchasing a house tour ($28 for General Tour and $31 for Living History Tour). However, if you don't book a house tour, you can pay $8 to enter the museum. This is a must-see for any Mark Twain enthusiasts, but this is also an experience that should be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates history, literature or architecture. However, young children will likely be bored. The Living History Tour is not recommended for any children under 8 to maintain the enjoyment of all those on the tour.
