Wonderful bicycle day trip on the island-off-the-island

点评：Rent a bike in Edgartown (we really liked Wheely Happy) and take the 2-minute ferry over (I'm not kidding, I think the ferry ride is only 2 minutes). DO NOT TAKE A CAR OVER -- THAT IS DEFEATING THE POINT AND YOU'LL BE IN LINE FOREVER. This island is the ultimate bicycle day trip. The ferry ticket for a person-with-bike is $7 round trip. Proudly walk right by all those fools sitting in their cars and hop on the ferry which probably departs every 5 minutes or so. Bike down the main road, stop at the one and only store on the island (it's a dump, but who cares) and just get some bottled water (you'll want it later). The japanese gardens are beautiful and worth a 20-30 minute stop. Proceed down to the very end and you're at unspoiled and totally underutilized ocean sandy beach. Spend 30 minutes walking the sand or spend half a day (see comment about bringing water, above). Then head back, taking your first left as soon as the road turns to pavement, and follow that road to the end and then left again and you're at the other "destination" on the island, more protected preserved unspoiled nature. Fair warning: if you take the "direct route" straight back from this SE corner to the ferry, that road is almost entirely sand. Yes, it's technically shorter but on bike it's about 5x more exhausting. If you've got kids with you, stick to the main paved road that you came in on. If you're on the Vineyard for more than 3-4 days, a day on Chappaquidick by bicycle feels to me like a must-do kind of thing. Sort of like eating ice cream in town. You just gotta do it. And it's gorgeous. Did I mention don't bring a car over? Please leave the car spots on the ferry for the people who actually live over there. We tourists should stick to the bikes, I think.
