点评:We arrived a bit early, and walked down the dimly lit hill (5.00 pm booking) to the castle entrance. We went into a huge marquee, showed our QR code (they seemed to have no record of our time) and bought a tea in a paper cup and a cake wrapped up in a paper bag. Not very Victorian, but the brownie was delicious.
Mrs Payne, the Victorian housekeeper, arrived on time and took us over to the castle. We realised quite early on in the tour, that the whole “story” was going to be about her, with a few references to the family. The kitchen was interesting.
We entered an ante room, which was described as the servants quarters, and she explained a bit of the role of the servants at Christmas and some information about the family. In all we visited 4 rooms. The tour took about 40 minutes and the guide filled in time by constantly asking ourselves and the other people on the tours questions - easily 20 questions, about how we look after our staff(!), games we played at Christmas, what we cooked, etc. At least 20 questions to pad out the lack of things to see and fill in time! The Christmas trees were dressed in modern day decorations ( I have my doubts that even Harrods in 1849 stocked these). A chair, hidden behind a portrait of the Watson children, was apparently where Dickens sat.
There was one lit fire, not roaring, as the rest had been left to die out.
We were also surprised at how abruptly the tour ended and we were ushered into the shop !!
Finally, we were told, before the visit commenced , not to take photos - there really wasn’t anything very festive to photograph.
