点评：The Memphis Zoo, which was ranked the No. 1 zoo in the United States by TripAdvisor in 2008, based on viewer opinions, is home to more than 3,500 animals representing over 500 different species. Located in Overton Park, in Midtown Memphis, it opened in 1906 and has grown to cover 76 acres with 19 different exhibits in three zones. Viewing all the exhibits requires a walk of about two miles. Operating seasonally, trams provide visitors with a guided tour of the exhibits. Along the way, there are several gift shops and eateries, several gardens, a children's playground and several family picnic areas. Visitors also can enjoy a tented 5,400-square-foot ice skating rink, camel rides and giraffe feeding. The East Zone brings hallmark features of Yellowstone National Park to the zoo, including a 25-foot replica of Old Faithful Geyser, and is home to grizzly bears, timber wolves and black bears. The exhibit also is home to polar bears and American bald eagles, African elephants, white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, ostriches, flamingos, parakeets, even two honey bee hives. The Central Zone showcases red pandas, gorillas, orangutans, lemurs, monkeys, baboons, African lions, cheetahs, leopards, tigers, jaguars, hippos, Nile crocodiles, aardvarks, wombats and vultures. The West Zone, specifically built for the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard in the world, also features a variety of colorful birds, an aquarium that houses piranhas, eels, turtles, archer fish, pufferfish and lionfish, a 1900s farm that is home to horses, goats, prairie dogs, chickens, sheep, cows, pigs, ducks and donkeys and a herpetarium that contains snakes, including a Burmese python, a green mamba and an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, American alligators, snapping turtles, tortoises and frogs.
