I recently walked into one of the Asian-owned nail salons on Newbury Street because they advertised eyebrow threading, and since the salon was empty, I assumed I would be seen quickly. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
As I entered, another woman—who was not Black—walked in at the same time. We were both asked to have a seat, but staff immediately began servicing her. After several minutes, no one approached me at all. Then three more non-Black women entered, and each of them was helped right away. Another non-Black customer walked in afterward and was also immediately assisted.
Meanwhile, I continued to sit there without acknowledgment. No check-in, no estimated wait time, not even a simple “someone will be right with you.” I felt completely ignored and dismissed.
After waiting far longer than made sense—especially considering I had arrived first—I decided to leave. Only then did a worker call out, “Don’t go, you will be seen.” But by that point, the lack of respect and the clear difference in treatment compared to the other customers was too much.
I cannot say what the intentions of the staff were, but I can say how the experience felt: uncomfortable, disrespectful, and based on the pattern I witnessed, discriminatory. No customer should be made to feel invisible.
I hope the salon reflects on how they welcome and prioritize all clients, because no one deserves to experience what I did.
