One of America’s Great Museums and Totally Worth a Long Visit

点评：This is one of America’s best art museums. Absolutely fabulous. We spent most of the day here and did not come close to seeing everything. The quality is uniformly high and the masterpieces abound. This has got to be one of very few American museums with a Donatello sculpture - and it has two! Incredible. There’s a whole bunch of magnificent paintings by Velasquez; the Dutch collection is truly glorious with the two, large Rembrandt portraits stealing the show; and, of course, the late nineteenth century is represented by an extraordinary assemblage of painting and sculpture from France. Museums in the northeastern United States are probably the best places in the world to see Monet, Manet, Van Gogh and the rest and Boston is no exception. Superb.
My favorite part of what I saw was probably the American art collection. Extraordinary paintings, sculpture and furniture. Obviously the large format paintings from John Singleton Copley, Thomas Sully and John Singer Sargent stand out, but this collection also integrates Latin American art into the story of American art. I don’t always love it when museums do this, as I think Latin American art is almost the polar opposite of the art produced in the North American colonies and in the early Republic, but the quality of Boston’s Latin collection is extremely high so it gets a pass. Amazing stuff to see everywhere even if it doesn’t really belong together.
