One of our least favorite Capitol experiences
State House的点评
点评：The State House in Maine was the 47th Capitol building that we have visited. Easy free parking by the Cross Legislative Building, from which it is an easy walk to the State House. We wanted to do the guided tour so arrived about 8:50 to catch the 9:00 a.m. tour. No one at the tour desk so security advised us to wait in the welcome room and someone would be there soon. About 9:00 a woman stuck her head in and said she would be our guide, but had to attend a 10-15 minute meeting first. We waited, and waited, and finally about 9:40 we decided to just do the self-guided tour as we were running out of time. As we exited the welcome room, a different woman was at the tour desk and said she would give us a tour. She had been only about 15 feet from where we had been waiting and never checked to see if anyone was waiting for a tour!
The interior of the building felt very sterile and plain. Replicas of flags were present, but the nylon replicas weren’t near as interesting as the real flags would have been. We have been to many capitols where the real flags were displayed. Supposedly, the real flags were on display at the museum across the street, but it was closed for renovation.
Also, we always purchase an ornament at each Capitol we visit. But no, ornaments (and other souvenirs) were only available at the museum, which was closed. Why wouldn’t you set up a small kiosk in the Capitol while the museum was closed? The lady at the tour desk suggested purchasing an ornament at Walmart! Seriously?
This was the worst experience we have had by far at a State Capitol building. I must say that Maine was a beautiful state to tour, but our Capitol visit definitely put a damper on things.
