点评：I recently visited Lake Grassmere Saltworks, located not far from the town of Blenheim and State Highway 1. It was an intriguing destination, especially since I had no prior concept of how sea salt is harvested. Unfortunately, the site lacked informative panels explaining the process in detail. Despite this, the visit was worthwhile as the whole place, bathed in the unique light of the time, had a timeless quality.
The pink-colored lake, so prominent on Google Maps, was not visible during my visit, possibly due to the time of year and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Fortunately, online descriptions provide a fascinating overview of the salt harvesting process. The lake, with its large shallow ponds, turns a deep pink color in the summer months due to microscopic algae and pink shrimps thriving in the high salt concentration. Seawater from the Pacific Ocean is pumped into the lake, where it evaporates under warm north-west winds, leaving behind salt that is then harvested.
Despite the lack of on-site explanations, the surreal and almost alien landscape of Lake Grassmere Saltworks made it a memorable experience.
