Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse EcoSanctuary的点评
点评：Our visit to Deerwood Ranch was the highlight of our vacation. We made a 5 hour round trip drive from the greater Denver area for our tour, and it was worth every minute of driving.
This is a hidden gem. Rich Wilson, the owner, was our tour guide. We felt like a family friend was taking us on a tour of his ranch!
We learned about the collaboration between the Wilson family and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Hearing about the behavior patterns of the horses was fascinating. Rich was a wealth of knowledge on the land, local area, wildlife, and the herd.
You climb a few steps into a lifted pickup truck outfitted with bench seating, and are driven straight into the pasture. You'll want to hold on because the ride can get bumpy. Rich drives you towards whatever site or horse he wants to show you, and then he gets out to explain things and tell you stories before getting back in the truck and driving to show you something else. This makes for a super personal experience.
The scenery at the ranch is absolutely breathtaking. The mountains we saw in Breckenridge on our trip paled in comparison to the views here.
TIPS: You have plenty of time to take photos. Dress in layers. The area is quite windy, and we were comfortable wearing sweatshirts under our winter coats even in June.
From the Deerwood entrance to the gift shop is a long drive, past multiple buildings. Just keep driving until the end of the road, that is where the gift shop is and also where the tour begins. Their gift shop is adorable, and has something for everyone. Water is available for purchase. There is an on site bathroom, which was very clean.
This was truly an unforgettable experience, and I would love to return some day!
